Eighty Years' War

Related conflict to the Thirty Years' War — listed alongside it as part of the broader European wars of religion. ¹

Connection to the War

Spain and the Dutch Republic "were already engaged in the Eighty Years' War" at the war's outbreak. The conflict "drew in the Dutch Republic and Spain, then engaged in the Eighty Years' War, while the acquisition of imperial territories gave rulers like Christian IV of Denmark and Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden ongoing motives to intervene." ¹

The Dutch revolt against Spain was therefore one of the structural preconditions that turned the Empire's internal religious dispute into a continental political war.
