Holy Roman Empire #

Fragmented Central European polity composed of hundreds of sovereign states, ruled by a Habsburg emperor. The stage on which most of the Thirty Years' War was fought. ¹

Religious Structure #

The 1555 Peace of Augsburg divided the Empire into Catholic and Lutheran states under the principle of cuius regio, eius religio. The settlement was "later destabilised by the expansion of Protestantism beyond these boundaries" — specifically, Calvinism, which Augsburg did not recognize. ¹

Period 1618–1635 #

Initially a civil war within the Empire. Largely ended as a civil conflict with the 1635 Peace of Prague. ¹
