Reformation

16th-century religious movement that produced the Protestant/Catholic divide within the Holy Roman Empire and supplied the underlying ideological tension of the Thirty Years' War. ¹

Origins of the Conflict

The Reformation "caused open warfare between Protestants and Catholics within the Holy Roman Empire, which ended with the 1552 Peace of Passau." Initial settlement was extended three years later by the Peace of Augsburg (1555). ¹

Why It Wasn't Enough

"Prior to the Reformation, shared religion partially compensated for weak imperial institutions." Once confessional lines hardened, that compensator broke — which is why the 17th-century fragmentation of imperial authority became militarized rather than containable. ¹
