Battle of Lützen

November 1632, Saxony. Tactical Swedish victory in the Swedish phase of the Thirty Years' War; Gustavus Adolphus killed in the action. ¹

Course

"Two months later, the Swedes and Imperialists met at Lützen, where both sides suffered heavy casualties." ¹

Composition Finding

"Based on an analysis of a mass grave discovered in 2011, a high proportion of 'Swedish' forces at Lützen were ethnic Germans, while less than 50% even came from Scandinavia." ¹

Aftermath

Gustavus's death forced Sweden's chancellor Axel Oxenstierna and field commanders Bernard of Saxe-Weimar and Gustaf Horn to continue the campaign — with mixed success marked by Nördlingen (1634).
