Appearance
Albrecht von Wallenstein
(1583–1634) Bohemian-born military entrepreneur and Imperial generalissimo. Raised vast paid armies for Emperor Ferdinand II on a self-funding model (granted imperial estates to pay his troops). ¹
Role
- Defeated the Danish intervention (1625–1629).
- After Edict of Restitution, briefly dismissed in 1630.
- Recalled 1632 to face Gustavus Adolphus; lost at Lützen despite Swedish royal death.
- After Lützen, negotiated openly with Saxony and Sweden; assassinated in Eger (1634) by officers loyal to the Emperor.
Significance
Coins the modern figure of the contractor-general: war as a business. His method of self-funding armies from territorial grants foreshadowed the relationship between state and capital in later European warfare.
