Edict of Restitution

Issued by Emperor Ferdinand II on 6 March 1629. Ordered the restitution of all ecclesiastical lands secularized since 1552 to Catholic Church control. ¹

Effect

Aimed to reverse three centuries of Protestant land acquisitions, thousands of monasteries and bishoprics across northern Germany. It provoked Protestant states to invite Gustavus Adolphus to intervene, triggering the Swedish phase. Effectively rolled back at the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 — a major Protestant victory of the settlements.

Interpretation

Historians mark it as the point where the war definitively ceased to be a religious dispute alone. By giving Protestants an existential material grievance and forcing Gustavus Adolphus's hand, it ensured continental-level politics would eclipse any theological settlement.
